Information on Defective Drugs & Products From Our Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Firm

When a doctor or drug manufacturer recommends a prescription or over-the-counter drug, you have the right to assume that the drug will improve your heath, not endanger it. At The Brod Law Firm in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, our attorneys aggressively litigate personal injury cases for clients who have been injured by dangerous drugs like Bextra®, Vioxx®, Accutane®, ephedra, and many more.

For a dangerous drug claim to be successful in Pennsylvania, the attorneys and their client must prove negligence or false advertising on the part of the drug manufacturer. For example, if the manufacturer failed to adequately test its product before offering it to consumers and this negligence leads to the injury or death of a consumer, the manufacturer can be held liable. Additionally, if a drug manufacturer knowingly and willfully falsely marketed a product, the manufacturer can be held liable for damages.

At The Brod Law Firm, our Philadelphia, Pennsylvania attorneys have successfully garnered awards for clients who have been harmed by a number of dangerous drugs, including:

In addition to drug recall claims, our attorneys also help victims and their families after injury or death caused by defective or dangerous medical devices. We are experienced handling cases involving:

Vioxx®

Once a popular treatment option for sufferers of arthritis and acute pain, Vioxx® was recalled in September 2004 after its use was linked to an increased incidence of heart attack, stroke, and other serious health effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration estimates that Vioxx® caused more than 100,000 heart attacks since its approval in 1999.

Bextra®

Recalled in early 2005, Bextra® was originally used in the treatment of arthritis and acute pain. Several clinical studies eventually found a strong correlation between use of the drug and an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious health problems. Bextra® has also been linked to the potentially fatal skin reaction Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS), which causes a painful rash and blistering and can lead to organ damage and death.

At The Brod Law Firm in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, our attorneys can evaluate your Bextra® claim and help you receive the compensation you deserve.

Ephedra

A naturally occurring substance, ephedra is a common ingredient used in a variety of dietary supplements, including many weight loss, body building, and energy stimulation products. Ephedra came under fire after a number of individuals reported serious adverse health effects related to its use, including heart attack, stroke, respiratory ailments, hypertension, depression, and death. In 2003, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an alert to warn consumers of the dangers of ephedra products, and in 2004, sale of dietary supplements containing the ingredient were banned in the United States.

Accutane®

Accutane®, a popular prescription drug used to treat severe acne, has been linked to a number of serious side effects, including depression, suicide, psychosis, and birth defects. Although the drug is still available, its manufacturer has come under intense scrutiny for failing to adequately warn consumers of the side effects associated with its use, and the FDA has required the addition of detailed warnings to the product label and inserts. Patients must also sign a consent form stating that they understand the risks before being prescribed Accutane®.

Our Philadelphia, Pennsylvania firm has experience representing Accutane® claims. Our attorneys can evaluate your case and help you receive compensation.

Baycol®

Used by nearly one million patients in the United States, Baycol® was prescribed to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. The drug’s manufacturer withdrew Baycol® from the market in 2001, however, after a number of cases of rhabdomyolysis, a potentially fatal condition that affects muscle and organ function, were linked to its use. More than 30 rhabdomyolysis-related deaths were reported.

Contact The Brod Law Firm to discuss your Baycol® case with our qualified team of product liability attorneys.

Rezulin®

Prescribed for the treatment of Type II Diabetes, Rezulin® was withdrawn from the market in early 2000 after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration received numerous reports of liver failure among patients, causing many serious injuries and resulting in more than 60 liver failure deaths.

The product liability attorneys at The Brod Law Firm help individuals injured as a result of Rezulin® and other defective drugs.

Medtronic Defibrillator/Guidant Defibrillator

Medical device manufacturers Guidant Corp. and Medtronic, Inc. both announced large-scale heart defibrillator recalls earlier this year. Defibrillators, extremely common medical devices used to shock an individual’s heart back to a normal rhythm in the event that the heartbeat becomes irregular, are surgically implanted in the patient’s chest. The recalled models have defects that can cause them to malfunction and prevent the life-saving shock defibrillator patients rely on. There have already been two deaths reported in relation to the Guidant devices.
